JAMES HALLIDAY - Australian Wine Companion 2014 -  July 25th 2013.

Today saw the release of the keenly awaited James Halliday wine guide,

The Australian Wine Companion 2014.

Mistletoe has retained again its coveted 5 red star status, our 8th year in succession as a 5 star winery, and has also been noted as one of the best wineries in the Hunter Valley.

In his April newsletter, James Halliday reviewed the Mistletoe Reserve Shiraz 2011, based on his tasting for the 2014 AWC, and his tasting notes for this wine, as included in the AWC 2014, follow.

Mistletoe Reserve Shiraz 2011

Rating: 95 points. Drink by 2030. Alcohol 13.8%.The best parcel of estate dry grown Shiraz was matured in new French oak puncheons.

The depth of flavour is far greater than the Home Vineyard, part due to the integrated French oak and part to the intense red and black fruits.

The "cellar to" 2020 message on the back label is very pessimistic.

For those of you who were fortunate to purchase the Mistletoe Grand Reserve Shiraz 2007 and the Mistletoe Reserve Shiraz 2009 we suggest that you get in early if you would like some of this 2011 Reserve Shiraz as we have a limited quantity.

The other Mistletoe wines included in James Halliday’s 2014 AWC ratings are shown below.

Hilltops Cabernet 2011 92 points.

Yet to be released. Bright red-purple; matured in used French oak, the intensity of fruit and tannins comes as a surprise, blackcurrant fruit with a cross-cut of savoury/herbal tannins. Very different to ersatz Hunter Valley cabernet, and could really surprise with a bit more bottle age.

Barrel Fermented Rosé 2011 94 points. Already sold out! Light, bright pink-salmon; crushed and chilled shiraz was given 24 hours skin contact, then pressed and barrel-fermented in used French oak. This is a rosé with considerable attitude, tangy and savoury, with a very long palate and aftertaste.

Keep an eye out for the 2013 vintage of this wine which will be released prior to Christmas 2013.

Reserve Chardonnay 2011 93 points. Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, fermented in French puncheons. The bouquet is yet to fully open up, but the palate has done so in no uncertain fashion, with its spear-like citrus edge to the melon and stone fruit flavours, the oak subtle. Has a bright future, but needs a year or two.

We agree, our Reserve Chardonnays do not show their best until 3-5 years in bottle.

Chardonnay 2012 92 points. Whole bunch-pressed, fermented and matured in used French puncheons. An elegant and fresh chardonnay picked at precisely the right time, and given exactly the right oak treatment, its mix of citrus and stone fruit given free varietal expression.

Reserve Semillon 2012 94 points.Quartz-white; at the very dawn of its life, with lemon zest, lemongrass and prominent acidity all making their mark; the old vines and skilled winemaking provide any assurance you need to cellar the wine for over 10 years.

Home Vineyard Shiraz 2011 92 points. Medium red-purple; maturation in used American and French oak has worked well with the medium-bodied blackberry and plum fruit, together with its light kiss of regional leather and earth; the tannin structure is particularly good, and will carry the wine through several years.

Chardonnay 2011 93 points.

Pale, bright straw-green; whole bunch-pressed and fermented in used French puncheons, previously used for Mistletoe Reserve Chardonnay. An elegant wine, the grapes - as usual - picked at optimum ripeness to give a delicious mix of stone fruit, melon and citrus. Very good value.

Re assessment of the now sold out 2011 vintage. We think the 2012 is following in its older siblings footsteps.

Mistletoe Noble Viognier 2012 96 points.

Full yellow-gold; this has been seriously botrytised, with gloriously sweet, luscious fruit absolutely true to the variety, yet with a vibrant and long finish.

A freakish wine. 375ml.

One of the Top Ten Australian dessert wines in James Halliday AWC 2014.

In summary,

Mistletoe has 9 wines ranking in assessment from 92 to 96 points.

One of the Top Ten desert wines in Australia for 2013 -14.

One of the top ten Rosés for the year - unfortunately all sold out!

High points as well for Shiraz, Semillon and Chardonnay.

Congratulations to our erstwhile and talented winemaker Nick Paterson, our viticulturist Liz Reilly and also to Glen Howard our dedicated vineyard contractor.

With these ratings we believe that Mistletoe has again exemplified what our motto proudly proclaims:

"Quality without compromise"
